City

Chisinau is the capital city of the Republic of Moldova.  It is the largest city of the country and its political, administrative, economical and cultural centre. The city lies on seven hills and is considered to be one of the greenest cities in Europe. It is sometimes also called the White City, as many of the older buildings are of white limestone.  It is definitely worth visiting it due to its historical monuments, amazing green landscapes in spring and summer time and, of course, for its incredibly kind, generous and hospitable people. 

Chisinau was for the first time mentioned in historical documents on 17 July 1436. It got status of a city in 1818 soon after becoming a part of Russian Empire. Chisinau became a capital city in 1940 when the Moldavian Soviet Socialistic Republic was established. In 1991, Chisinau was declared to be the capital city of the newly created independent European state - Republic of Moldova.

Nowadays the population of Chisinau is more than 750 000 inhabitants. Chisinau is divided into 5 sectors: Centru, Riscani, Botanica, Ciocana and Buiucani.

The downtown of the city is one of the most beautiful parts of Chisinau because of its little old neighborhood with buildings from the 19th century, mixtured with soviet architecture and new modern glass buildings which start to appear. The most important spots of the city are located here: the City Hall, the Government of Moldova, the Moldovan Parliament and the Presidency, all situated along Stefan cel Mare boulevard - the main street of Chisinau; Embassies of different countries from around the world, state institutions, business centers, banks, shopping centers, museums and beautiful parks.
